Why sound design is the invisible engine of high-retention edits

Viewers may not name the sound mix, but they feel its control. Small sonic decisions create a much smoother watch.

Why sound design is the invisible engine of high-retention edits
Sound gives an edit its sense of place and intention. Start with dialogue: consistent level, clean noise floor, and enough space for every word. Then build a restrained bed of room tone and music.

Use impacts sparingly. A whoosh on every transition teaches the ear to ignore the transition. Instead, save emphasis for the moments where the story genuinely changes direction.

Before delivery, listen at low volume. If the voice, structure, and emotional turns still read clearly, the mix is doing its job.
